What in the world is this critter?

I have seen a couple of these in my tank, but have never been able to get a good picture. There is another one that comes out at night that is a bit bigger (1" or so) and totally black. Anyone know what they are? Good or bad?
Thanks.

I wish I had some. Great little snails with an awesome defense mechanism (like a lizard losing its tail).
They are also one of the few saltwater snails that can reproduce successfully in a tank.

Does losing their tail kill them? I was catching some out of my tank for a fellow member here and about 8 of them came apart like that.

Doubtful or they wouldn't do it :) It probably regrows... I like my stomatellas :) I have like 4 different colours in my tank. Great pic!! I can't seem to get a good shot of mine.

Nope won't kill them. It deliberately breaks off easily and then wiggles around to distract predators while the snail makes its escape.

Thanks. I'll try to get a pic up of the black one, but I've only seen it at night with the flashlight. It's kind of interesting looking, it's black as black can be.
