What is a closed loop system

Someone was telling me instead of putting powerheads into the tank I should do a closed loop, what is that?

basically its where a pump will take the water from one place in the tank and pump it to another instead of going into a sump or refuge it just turns over in the tank.
as far as how to do it I dont know LOL

overflow out of tank directly into input on external pump then out of pump directly back into tank. The water never actually pools anywhere else it stays in the pipe or pump. HTH

When drawing it's source directly from the tank, the SCWD wavemaker is a perfect example of a closed loop.
