what is a refugium and what is it used for?

Refugium, a safe place. Place for raising pods (great natural fish food) good place for macroalgae for nutrient export. Running the lights over the refugium on a schedule opposite the main tank helps stabilize the PH. I haven't noticed a down side to having a refugium.

thanks,
i did my research on the web on them. i have limited space near my tank and do not know where or how to set it up. i have an old 10 gal tank but need to figure the logistics on setting it up. i have a wet/dry filter under the tank but have little room for more under there. any suggestions?

You could use your wet / dry for a refug if its big enough. Refuges also when loaded with live plants will reduse your nitrate & phosphates can make them 0
.
