keep seeing this word and being new to the hobby was wondering what is was???? just trying to become as knowledgable as some of you folks

A fuge is two different things. One is to put sick/picked on fish in. It has no macro algae or sand bed.
The other is where you put a deep sand bed and macro algae and its used to get rid of nutrients, grow copods, and other little critters.

I call the former a "hospital tank" and the latter a fuge.
The difference is that you do not plumb a hospital tank in with your main system. This keeps the medications out of the system and in your sick fish.
A fuge is plumbed in with your existing system and it gives more biofiltration capacity to your tank. A fuge can have live rock, macro algae, mangroves or just about anything you can think of that will help filter the water. The purpose of a fuge is to keep these sensitive algae away from your fish so that they don't get eaten, hence the name REFUGium. It provides refuge for sensitive organisms.

A refugium is nothing more than a separate tank plumbed into a DT that is free from predators. In it's truest sense it is specifically for the purpose of growing pods, mini stars, and other critters as a food source for your DT. Therefore to be a true refugium it should have no light if your goal is to produce as many critters as possible.
But most commonly on this board people are actually referring to an algae scrubber when they speak of a "fuge". An algae scrubber is a seperate tank plumbed into a DT that is meant specifically for the growth and harvesting of Macro-Algae as a means to export excess nutrients.

The refugium is a filter, rite? So does one only need a proper refugium as their filter (with skimmer of coarse) or is a seperate filter also required?? Thanx! Yeah... I'm new! lol

That's up to you. All that an hob filter is is a place to run carbon and a place to trap debris and a place for bacteria. A refugium is all of these too, granted you put some filter floss in it, so an hob filter isn't necessary, but you can use a seperate filter if you desire.
