What is a sump?

I am so confused about this, what is it?

it's just another tank that you can put your equipment into. i.e. heaters, skimmer,etc. You can also add the trace elements into a sump as opposed to adding it directly into a tank.

a sump is a smaller tank that is filled up with swater and is being circulated through the main tank so you can put filters and heaters etc. in it and that water will be moved into the main tank until it is eventually brought back down by the hose and is cleansed again by your equipment
