What is going on?

Okay, my tank started cycling and I got a cleaning crew like suggested, about 8 hermits and one emerald crab, the guy at my LFS suggested these. Now my tank looks worse then before I got them. The sand is full of junk, it looks like maybe stuff the crabs are pulling off the rock. The whole bottom of the tank looks like it has not been cleaned in months. Ive only had them for three days and already this much damage!!! Is this normal? What do I do to clean it up?? I tried to fish some of it out but It just stirred up the mess worse. :help: I miss my white sand!!

need more info: how long has the tank been cycling and how are you cycling it (with LR, I assume). just to take a stab at it, it sounds like maybe diatoms that you get during the cycle, that will usually clear up soon. after that, the green algae starts to grow, then the coralline algae (in my experience).

Im cycling with about 85pds of LR and 60pds of LS. My tank has been cycling now for about 4 1/2 weeks. Is this something that i need to wait out untill it passes?

wait it out. the diatoms usually come in at the end of a cycle and last for a few weeks. you can get more cleaning crew though, that's not a problem.
