WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THIS PLACE?

So i haven't been on this sight for about a month. i just logged in and the first two posts i read the people were attacking each other about their tanks not being cycled or over stocked. god has the economy gotten bad enough that people must insult others and their possessions online? My 265 gallon reef crashed last month and killed thousands of dollars of livestock that we have had for years, and i am not this crabby! It is on the mend. maybe this is what keeps me happy. idk but jeez people these days.think back to first grade and treat others the way you would want to be treated! lol

LOL...I hope you aren't judging us by wayner...he was indeed treated badly at first. He was told what to do and wouldn't listen and we did get a bit crabby. However we are all playing well together now.

So what happened to your tank? I figure I lost about $1500.00 worth of coral when I had a heater bust in two and shock my tank. I had GFI outlets and no fish died, a few of the hardiest corals bounced back.
I didn't know how much all my corals at that size were worth until I tried to replace them.
In hind sight I guess it's best not to know till later..it was my turn to be shocked.

As horrible as it is, it would be good for us to know what happened to yours so we can be sure to not make that mistake, or prepare for some event that you hadn't. Poor Spanko lost his fish when he forgot to put his skimmer on after vodka dosing. He is now thinking of a timer so it will resume automatically.

well our tank was not a victim of faulty equipment or anything like that, it was partial stupidity on our part. well back in june/july we were doing some trading with a local guy. we traded him some rock for some corals. he gave us these pathetically small frags that were infected with some god awful parasite. well at least we found out he had parasites after people asked us who we traded with. so to make a long story short we had just upgraded to 400 watt radiums and the corals he gave us started to die. we considered the lighting might have been to strong, so we shortened the light time. a month later every coral we had is dead. we had to painfully watch our dinner plate sized pagoda cup deteriorate. we tried lougals dips. didn't work. we also lost a giant moon brain colony. these were our favorite corals.
so now in the present day, we have a 265 tank with a hippo tang, pair of clowns, coral beauty, and yellow anthias, and about 800 lbs of LR.and 90 ish lbs of LS. at least the fish weren't hurt :) to day we are looking into upgrading our cleanup crew. hopefully 250 nassarias and 150 crabs will be on the way to NE soon!~It pays to be optimistic :)
~Moral of the story dont buy things from people who have parasites.lol

WOW....150 crabs.....that's a lot.....I'd seriously cut them down, and get some different types of snails, like cerith and astrea..and some turbos

Sorry to hear this though.....I wonder if dipping them before you put them in would have helped?? I know it does with some stuff...not sure about all parasites though

are they out of your tank now? How would you know?

we are just gonna take it really slow and build up a good cleanup crew. it is my goal for today to find out what to get for a clean up crew.lol too bad the clean up crew couldnt do my homework cuz i have way too much.lol

Did that guy know he had a sick tank before he contaminated yours? Will your tank ever be safe for coral again? Do you know what kind of parasite?

How horrible that tiny little frags could do so much damage..Does the guy know what happened?

yes, the guy said he has a parasite free tank, but everyone we have talked to around here says he has loads of parasites. we havent talked to him since the trade. i dont think we will. but he is always emailing us whenever he has some frags. we dont reply. it is kind of rude, but i wouldnt want to tell him how the frags he gave us killed our tank. that would probubly make him feel really bad.

Maybe the guy really doesn't know....you would be doing him a favor and others as well. What I don't understand is how he could have corals at all to sell or trade, I mean if it killed your tank it has to kill his...

I don't think the Wayner situation is better, just people got tired of his smart@ss, snarky, comments and have him blocked or just ignore him. The first thread, not the flounder one was the one where he acted in a way that was disrespectful which set the tone for dealings with him.

Sorry to hear of your losses. I agree, you should let him know, he may not be fully aware.

He had something like a six hundred gallon system. several tanks hooked together. and for some reason has begun to tear it down. my answer to the question is that his corals mutated to the bad water. they were immuned. maybe.lol i am not a scientist, but they could have adapted extremley fast to the water? lol

Adapting to water is one thing, but to parasites, that's another.
