What is on my DSB?

I recently changed to a DSB. It is about 4-5 inches deep. After a couple of days a thick maroon "carpet" was covering the entire surface of the sand. On top of the "carpet were millions of buubles that were attached to the "carpet." After a couple of more days the bubbles actually lifted the "carpet" off the sand and it floated to the top where I removed it with a net. What is this crazy stuff? Most of it is gone but some still remains.

This was algae. It sounds like you maybe went through another cycle , did you? Sometimes during the cycle the algae will grow and then dissapear, although in your cicrumstance you got lucky :) I would check your phosphates and make sure your are not overfeeding too heavily. Usually phosphates will increase the possibility of algae blooms.

P.S. Check you tap water if that is what you use and maybe switch to RO or DI water.

Check out my website's Reef Basics, you have red slime algae. It will help you get rid of it.
