what is the best RO unit to get?

i've spent enough money now on purification filters to buy an RO unit, so now i've made up my mind to get one. anyone know which is the best one? i'm in kentucky and the water is pretty hard here. lots of phosphates and other minerals.

I got a 5 stage 100 gpd RO/DI unit off of ---- for $135 that works great. Unit is new from someone that only sells off of ---- (From reading up on them, I also gather that they are the manufacurer of the units, so no middle man markups). Great service and support. Product is also guaranteed. Total dissolved solids after processing are at 0.

frankl15207. recently I have been looking at those same filters online. I was thinking of getting one, but I didn't know anyone that had one. Does anyone else have that unit? I believe that one is and RO/DI correct?

I rent mine from Culligan. I live in the country with really bad well water. It turns pure brown from rust after sitting a few minutes. The water now runs througha softener, and then through the RO unit. They installed the equipment, and maintain it. It costs $16.00 a month and last month (after 1 year) the membrane was so full of rust, they had to replace the middle membrane unit. It was over $100, but because I rent it, I didn't have to pay for the replacement. This is water that already runs through the softener, and it amazed the Culligan man, because after the softener, there should be almost no rust. I guess, my point is, that you can rent them cheap, and they do all the maintenance, and parts replacement. Every 6 months I pay for new filters, which runs about $8.00. I didn't have a tank in my current home, and I'm new to the hobby, and my tank has been curing and up and running in my new home, (which we move into tonight, yeah!!!). I have RO units that I purchased and had installed during the construction. So, I'll be on city water that is run through the RO unit. I'll have to take care of maintenance now. Anyway, renting them is an option if you don't have a lot of upfront money, or don't want to mess with installation and maintenance.

I agree with golfsh...the filters on the inside make the difference. Most RO units filters are interchangeable. Buy a cheap unit and when you replace filters, just get really good ones.

We bought a unit at Lowes for $200. I like it because it installed under the sink and has a 5 gallon tank full of RO water always available. The waste water ratio was very good as well and it has auto back flush. Took about 2 hrs to install and works great. Big bonus is that replacement filters are available here at Lowes.

The construction still plays a part. The seals, the canister fittings.
I agree most are the same but some are built better than others.

I use the Kent Marine Maxima MAX60HiS.
4 stage 60 gallon per day RO/DI unit.
It works good, but it's the only one I have personal experience with.
I can make no comparisons - or say which one is best.
I can only say that I'm happy with my purchase.

Same one as Javatech and it works great. I blew the media in the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals tap water filter at 20 gallons. I have already made over 50 gallons with this unit and the DI cartridge hasn't discolored at all. TDS meter shows our water at over 600 before filtering. 0 afterwards.
I also had some questions before and after the purchase and receipt of the unit and they have been really great with support.
It is RO and DI.
