no, it's washing soda - sodium carbonate versus sodium bicarbonate. It raises the pH AND the alkalinity. A good reference is this article:

I recently learned that you can bake baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) at 300 degrees for an hour and it turns into 'washing soda'. At under $1.00 a pound it's a deal! and the calcium in the Oceanic is keeping my coralline thriving.
