Tang Police here
:
NO tang is "recommended" for anything smaller than a 90g
But if you MUST have one...you are allowed either a Small yellow or a Kole tang..
That is all.
Hippos and powders are min 120, recommend 180g+

It's not that they won't live... If I stuffed you in a box like a coffin you'd live....be happy...probably not..
Just like there are species of Dogs that need extra running room, like greyhounds, dalmations,etc....there are fish that are like "runners"
Tangs are like those types of "runner" dogs
Would you keep a greyhound in a 5x5 pen it's whole life? no
So why would you keep a tang in a 55g.?

any full grown tang would need a large tank 100 +
but realisticly i never buy a fish for my tank that is larger than what the LFS consider med
i only plan on puting one tang in sailfin is by far the best tang eva!
and if he gets to big i just head over to the LFS with a pic and say can i trade him in for a smaller one sure i would lose some $$ small sell for 29.99 while large go for 79.99 or more but hey maybe he will get a better home or i possable i can get another hobbest too help out i give him the large he buys me the small

The only problem with smaller specimens of the BIG tangs is the fact they are more like babies. A 2" hippo or powder is very young and doesn't have as good of a chance of survival as a 4-5" tang of the same species. At least this is my understanding from reading about them. (This is, also, why I dream of an 8 foot long, 240 gallon tank in our living room.
Tang heaven! :happyfish :happyfish )
NOTE: I'm sure there are many success stories about folks getting a 1.5 to 2 inch long blue hippo and keeping them for years, so don't be HATING!

Achilles tangs are very hard to keep, very delicate, and very prone to ich. They require very large tanks with lots of rock to graze on

I am going to say something that someone PMed me awhile back. He said that if a person was in the fishes position, it would suck. Which is true. But he then mentioned that fish dont think like that. Which I also believe is true. They will get a little stressed but they wont be dieing in there, or anything similar.
Now, I dont want to be on everyones bad side about this comment, but I am just saying what I believe, and another person that I choose to leave annonmise.

i know myself, i had a powder brown in my 125 (ich took him from me) but the MAIN and FIRST thing i noticed about him, was he was very busy, swimming all dat long the whole length of my tank. i would say (but im no expert, nor am i on the "TANG POLICE" force) but judging from my experience they DO need a lot of room. in a small tank i think a tang like that finds itself turning around too much and i think that pisses them off. my dad has a naso tang 4-5 inches long in his 75 gallon and he looks really confused and mad as it is constantly turning around. by the way, he also has a yellow and an achilles in there, i am trying to talk him into taking the yellow to the LFS because he is beating the S%^ out of the achilles, and giving me the naso, he wont budge though
