I test for amm, trites, trates, pH, calc, phos, and alk. I have API, but will be looking for a better test kit when these run out.

API is a good kit to start with. but if your looking for a really long term no money spaired kit. sulfrite(i cant spell it) but they are like $+20.. each kit. i think the Ph is like $19.99 and everythign else is like $22-26.99 range. very good kit but very expensive to buy all at once.

In my opinion the best kit and first line of feed back from a tank is the hobbyist. Learn to read your tanks inhabitances state of health. This gives you a jump on relying on just test kits

It really depends on what you're keeping.
If you have a fish only system then you really only need to test for Nitrate, PH, and Salinity. A cycled system should never have detectable ammonia or nitrite without a death occurring to cause a spike. if you're still getting ammonia readings after the tank has completed it's cycle then you're probably feeding too much.
If you're keeping corals, specificly SPS, LPS, or Clams then you need to test for Calcium, Alkalinity, and Magnesium as well.

API are good general kits and easy to use. I do not like their calcium test kit though. For overall testing with good easy to read results seachem has been my kit of choice. However there iodine kit has been giving me false readings. Red sea has just introduced one that I am going to give a try.
