What is the difference between the metal halide bulb you can buy online at a pet supply dealer or by going to Home Depot or a Lowes to get a metal halide bulb? <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />

To put it another way, it is Kelvin degrees. Kelvin is the spectrum of light, rather than temperature.
Home depot sells regular "street lighting".
I don't know if you are familiar with Sylvania or Grainger. But if you look at their catalogs, they do give a Kelvin rating. Most standard (Home Depot) type lighting rarely exceeds 3900K. Some even go to 4300K and 4900K.
Daylight sun is between 5500K and 20000K. You need to be in this spectrum to imitate natural lighting. The higher the Kelvin rating the more to the blue (and UV) spectrum you are reaching. This is the light that permiates water in the first 60 feet of the ocean. It is the best way to imitate the true light that corals actually use.
Hope this helps!

Man i work at the electrical department at the home depot here in greeley and have thought about the Mh bulbs we sell as replacement bulbs. I am going to talk to mh dept. head tomorrow, to see if we could special order some bulbs in the higher kelvin rating cause i know we have a phillips catalog laying around somewhere. MAn it might be cheaper to special order them from HD than buy em from a fish store!I am definately gonna look into this! iLL let you guys know what i find out tomorrow!

Sylvania has an online catalog and offers only a couple of bulbs at the higher kelvins. Maybe you can get them cheaper, but they are offering them at a much higher price on line. let us know!

I'm definitely insterested in this too. our lowes has the bulbs too, but they don't have the fixture to put the bulb into. What is the fixture that everyone is using to put their bulbs in? and where is the best price?
thanks. :D
