so far i've seen what looks to be a baby chocolate chip starfish, a pointy urchin that came out of nowhere, and tons of copepods, amphipods, and feather dusters.

a blue ringed octopus 7 days and still alive while placing the rock in the vats, it came crawling out. Must have found some moisture and food within its crevice.

I'm sorry as I'm very new to this, but "creatures" can just grow out of your live rock? So, when I do put live rock in my tank, chances are something else may come of it?

Green Carpet Anemone. Little guy stung me too when I picked up the rock it came on. I think I was pinching it as I picked up the LR.

for something as cool as an octopus or a carpet anenome it would be interesting to see pictures if possible. that's amazing, i'd have thought an octopus would have all sorts of special requirements. got me beat already, that sure didn't take long!

it took a couple of years before i noticed the baby starfish. hard to tell if it came out of the rock or hitched a ride on a coral, but it's cool to get free things either way.

had to put in refugium as it grew up, didn't want to find it drilling into something valuable.

a huge brittle star fish, had tank running for 3 years and never seen it till one night walked in the room and turned on lights and it ran from one side to the other, (280 gallon 7 feet long tank) in 0.00000000000001 seconds, it blow my MIND, scard the living chiiissccchhllleeee out of me, then ran to get cam, but only got pic of it hiding behind a rock.

its still in there some where.

Live rock is "live" because it is taken from the oceans and kept in salt water to maintain the healthy bacteria and that provide filtration in your tank. Due to this, many times when you buy live rock you could inadvertently get an extra hitchhiker along with it. Any creature small enough to hide in the caves or holes of a piece of live rock could keep safe long enough to make it to your tank.
Common ones are snails and crabs, worms, shrimp (including mantis shrimp) etc; but as you see from this thread now and then more unusual ones manage to get through as well

I've had a xenia and stomatopod (mantis) hitchkiker. Had to buy the mantis its own tank.
There was a thread recently where someone actually had a fish hitchhiker (maybe it was a wrasse...not sure).

Are you serious about that blue ring octopus? You got damn lucky you got it in the tank safely. That would have made for a bad day. You never would have known what hit you. I don't know if thats worth having.

i have had several starfish 3 clams and tons on sotial anemonies and father dusters and when i bought a beg of sand there was lots of broken glass in it took 3 days to get it all out but there still could be more.

About a year and half ago I posted about a fuzzy thing that was maybe .25" around with spines, turned out to be a baby urchin. It's now about 1.25 around, survived 2 tanks moves when I thought that it was already dead and wasn't even looking for it. Then it re-appeared about 9 months ago and is kinda the celeb of the tank.
