What is the purpous of a refugium

I was wanting to know what is the purpous of a refugium and how do they work. :notsure:

Refugiums offer many benefits to a reef tank or any marine set up. First, they are great for denitrification, will add more water volume to your system, will encourage the growth of microorganisms, can run lights counter to main tank to help stabilize PH, and many other reasons. The great thing about them is that they are not that expensive to set up and they make an easy and fun DIY project
