anyone eat mango? how do you tell if it is ready to eat?
i'm going to have to try the star fruit.
I thought those were normal fruits. BTW, I smell them, if they smell like they are ripe they usually are and make sure they are soft but not mushy.

I eat figs right off the tree...wait till they feel OVERripe, squishy, properly ripened figs (and persimmons too) don't travel well at all. You can buy them and wait for them to ripen but off the tree is best of course (I really should live somewhere tropical) You eat the insides, and you can eat the skin as well, personal preference. the flesh can be just pulled off with your mouth. Figs taste like heaven (you eat the seeds, it's a good texture), and persimmons are a little more of an acquired/unique taste.
The prickly pears come Mostly
-despined, they should be....turgid? Not hard but not mushy with a rich colour to the outside, purple-toned and mostly not green. Watch out for the tiny hair-like spines, they'll get 'ya. I cut off the top and bottom, run a slit up the side and "undress" the fruit, it will pop right of it's skin. The flesh has an odd texture and you eat the many seeds...I find it very refreshing and I have a hard time eating just one.

This is not how I would cut it but it shows the inside. Careful, the juice stains.
Ophy: I've only had lingonberry jelly, is it like a cranberry on it's own? (tart?)
And i would like to try the dragonfruit, what's it taste like?

I have had a couple raw I think, but mostly in drinks (Ikea
), jam and particularly on IHOPs swedish style international passport breakfast.

heard bout this but never tried it
Synsepalum dulcificum
It's called the 'Miracle Fruit' because it can alter the taste of sour items. Miracle Fruit is also easier to say, and spell, than it's official name - synsepalum dulcificum.
The Miracle Fruit is a bright red, oval-shaped berry approximately 2 to 3 cm long containing a single seed. Click this image for greater detail.
Although not sweet itself, when a single fruit is eaten and the fleshy pulp allowed to coat the taste buds of the tongue and inside of the mouth, an extraordinary effect occurs.
The fruit enables you to eat a slice of lemon or lime without wincing. The marvelous aroma and inherent sweetness of the citrus remains but the sourness is almost completely covered. The effect remains for approximately 30 minutes, or more.
this info comes off the site miraclefruitman.com where they are sold i found out about them through Attack of The Show on G4.... this is a weird fruit

That would be rather cool, though I admit to eating limes and lemons straight too
I am a fan of "red mung bean" in many asian desserts, also taro root, plantain, etc.
Of course I am also fond of the fruits called "tomato, beans, and nuts"

OOOOOH so a food that can stab me if I try to eat it
seems like some work to enjoy a fruit.
I stopped by a couple of food markets here in jersey and none that I stopped at carries them.
So you eat the seeds like a Chinese apple (that’s what they are called in NJ) I think they are called pomegranates now.
I have to admit my curiosity has peeked for this fruit.
I did eat figs off a tree once
A lot of work in the winter to wrap a tree up, I will attest to a real fig is nothing like a fig newton
No cakey outer shell off the tree

I have to hide it. But if I go out for seafood, or something where they give you lemons. Yeah, I have to eat those.

I read the article about them tasting like banana and strawberry mixture, but wow that takes some guts to put in your mouth with out knowing the taste.
Peoples sense of taste often differs from one's own.
taste like chicken..... no it taste how a frogs leg should taste….. Like a frog.

When it comes to something likely to be sweet, I don't have too much hesitation. Other foods I may be more skeptical of...but overall I am pretty open to new things. I have to try prickly pear I think.

You guys really should try sweet lemons. They are not acidic or tart. You can find them at Mediterranian markets. $1.50/lb is comon, but the last bunch I bought was on sale for $.69/lb.
