It's a purple invetebrate of some kind... looks sort of like a slug.. and has this yellow thing sticking out of it. Someone told me it was a kind of feather duster but I don't think so. I don't remember much more... do you guy know what I'm talking about?

<a href="http://www.divensurf.com/scuba/images/BelowWater/spanishshaw1.jpg" target="_blank">Nudibrach</a> Is this it?

You might want to find out ASAP
Some are good for a reef and some are not! they usually only eat 1 thing some eat sponges, worms or other nudibrachs ext............
So If you want to keep it you need to supply the specific food and if it wont work in your tank you should get it out and take to a LFS
This is just what I understand But I am (also) not an expert :) :D

It eats sponges and will starve to death in your tank in fairly short order in most likelyhood.

if it's a shop you frequent you may want to inform them about the frailty of these animal and incourage them not to purchase them anymore. They had 4 at my LFS which they believed ate algae. When I explained to the owner what they were and what they ate he agreed not to stock them anymore. Some things are just best left were they started.
