Can anyone tell me what this funky looking thing is growing on my live rock, it started out as what looked like a tiny redish paper thin leafy looking thing but now has grown rapidly into about the size as a soccer ball. I have never seen this in any lfs or in a book. This thing has multiplied in around 2 months to this size. Its attractive as the leavy looking things flow back and forth with the current, I felt these leavy looking things and they are slimy to the touch. Could someone please help in identifing this creature.

Im not positive, but my guess would be some type of macro algea. Im guessing this because of you fast you said it has grown.

I saw what you are talking about in my LFS.It was like a rust red color flowing paper attached to a blue mushroom rock.I asked at the store and they said it was a macroalgae.I wanted to buy but they said as a macroalgae it would probably be eaten by my Purple Tang.

Macro algea is very good. It is good that herb. fish like to eat it (i guess he tang doesnt like that kind, my tang LOVES when i give it macro algea.) but it also used Nitrates in your water, then lowering it
