What is this under my star polyps?

I was checking over our corals yesterday and there is white and yellow fibrous looking stuff on the bottom of the rock with our green star polyps. It reminds me a bit of spider web/eggs. I couldn't get a better pic with my camera. Need to get an acrylic box for top down pics. I was wearing gloves and didn't touch it. Do you think it's something bad?

Probably the opposite or live rock. Was it smashed down into the sand or against other rock?
Other then that, looks like the tank has been up an running for a bit and is quite healthy.

Edit to the above:
I just read your full description...was there actually a spider looking thing or was it just spiderweb-like?

no tiny creatures or anything. i've checked it a few times over the past week and it looks the same. i didn't think it was a sponge because it seems more fibrous/stringy than the sponges we do have? seems like it's nothing to worry about. the star polyps are on top of a flat piece of live rock, has never been on the sand. tank has been running for 14 months now.

some spongers have strings like that. Or it could be a type of worm. regardless, its harmless. if its gets unsightly, just pick it off with a knife or tweezers.
