This was attached to a rock with mushrooms now it is free from the rock and it inflates and deflates, moves around

Try taking the pic from a little farther away and make sure you're on the macro (flower symbol) setting I can't tell from this pic.

looks like a cleaner clam to me.... i have never seen one all inflated like that tho..

Dead clam?

It is definitly not dead. I took it out of the water and it was pumping like grasping for air. it also has like a small skinny thing that sticks out one end sometimes and moves around.

Yup clam. Just put it back in the sand. It may disappear into the sand, that's okay. Will help to filter / clean your water.

Looking at the picture closer this morning it looks more like a muscle(sp?)
