I think it is a red spotted sand perch. The LPS said it is an orange spotted shrimp goby.

Doesn't look like a shrimp goby to me either. Does it have one or two dorsal fins? If it has one then it is not a shrimp goby.

Here is another view. 2 dorsals, but the first one nearest the head looks like its a pretty solid color burnt red.
Also, no poka dots on the body, but there are dots on the fins like the goby.
I guess once I get him in the main tank, I'll know for sure if he begins to burrow holes.

Cute! He's down right homely! LOL However, he was so alert, made immediate eye contact with me. I just couldn't leave him in that small little cubicle at the LPS! LOL

Beth, it looks exactly like the redspotted sand perch in Scott Michael's "Marine Fishes" book. Page 324

Yeah I think it is a sand perch also. I have never seen a goby and especially the orange spotted shrimp gobies have a first dorsal fin that is a solid color.

BTW- If the fish isn't a Sand Perch........he kinda looks like a Basslet. Maybe a Tobacco Basslet, or Chalk, or Lantern?

Unfortunately, I do not have LFS. There are no LFS in my area. :(
Check out the Acronyms thread! :p
