What is wrong with my hairy mushrooms?

10ppm is not a high level of nitrates. Yes, it could be lower but I seriously doubt it is the cause of your problems.
My clowns rub all over my hairy shrooms and they look like that every once in a while.

Nitrates have dropped to 5.0 ppm since trimming the rotted gorgonian.
The hairy mushrooms still look the same.

I moved mine directly under the lights last night. I hope they improve; my clowns are awful depressed and are now being hosted by a large colony of Armor of God palythoas.

Both bulbs: the 36 watt 50/50 (50% 10,000 K and 50% 7,100 K blue) and the 36 watt true actinic 03 are about six months old; I will replace them in early May 2007.

I think 80.0 -82 degrees is on the upper end of where I would want my water temp. Try to gradually reduse it to 76-78. 10 ppm nitrates is not high and should not be the cause. Try moving them away from the chalice. Also observe tha chalice at night to see where those feeder tenticle end up.
