What kind of algae is on my rock?

As soon as I get my camera unpacked I will get a picture up, but for lack of better terminology, it looks like patches of dark (blackish) pubic hairs.

Might be hair algea, which could of course be covered by something else as well. I've had hair algea covered in cyano, which was an interesting sight...a good cleanup crew, good flow, shorter lighting times, and water changes usually clean it up.

Its not in the tank yet, still rock in buckets. I bought a hair algae treatment, but I dunno. The hair algae i have seen on here is green and looks like something my cat horked up. These patches arent very thick. Maybe 25 strands per square inch. And they arent in a patch that is all bundled up, its more of a bunch of individual strands.

With out pics it is hard to tell, but I had something similar from you description and it never became a problem, I actually think my fish ate the stuff, it is no longer present in my tank. If you are concerned about it, I would do as earlybird suggested with scrubbing and rinsing with salt water, you may have to do that more than once though. Try and post some pics, maybe we can help you more.
