....would you recommend for a 30-55gal reef tank?? I think the sump/refugium is out of the question (at least for now).
I was thinking a wet/dry with an overflow box as the best way to go, as I don't think we'll be getting a pre-drilled glass aquarium. How is CPR for a filter manufacturer??
Any other brands/filter types I should look in to??
EDIT: I also found a Cyclone Bak Pak II combination Cannister Bio Filter and Protein Skimmer....thoughts??

why is a sump with a refugium out of the question? i'd much rather have a sump/refugium combo than a wet/dry any day.
if you don't feel you can make your own, oceanic makes sumps.
i would go with an octopus hang on protein skimmer before the cpr bak pak.

It would be out of the question for cost measures. 'Cause then we have to buy another tank and pumps etc etc....
Plus, we wouldn't be getting a pre-drilled tank, it's out of our budget

I have a 20 gallon and 55 gallon tanks. I use hang on the back filters w/ LR and about (san bed, 2"-20 and 3"-55's). I would recomend at a minimum filtration (for a 30=450 gph and for a 55=800 gph). I try to keep them as clean as possible.
P.S. I do NOT keep reefs, just fish.

If you're going reef you may find the sump to be most cost effective long term and better for your corals as well. Up front costs suck... but the benefits are worth it. I'm building a 3 x 4 foot frag tank and the only filtration I'm going to have on it is a sump with a skimmer in it and cheato.

i had a aquaclear 110 i converted into a minfuge easy to do just google it they can be found cheep on the e#@y place. stuff it with some cheto. i also ran a magnum hob with live rock rubble in it on a 30. it worked well and i never had any problems. i didnt keep it when i upgraded but when i first started out and didnt have 350-400 bucks for a fuge/skimmer/filter/light combo it did the trick.

a wet/dry is not going to be much cheaper. you will need the same pump for that as you will the sump.
you mentioned using a hang on overflow. this is what you coulld use for the sump as well.
the only extra cost will be a 7 dollar clip on light from home depot.
