Isn't running 24/7 give you lots of other unwanted algae in your refugium? Is it even good for chaeto?

Dont mean to step on any toes or anything, but it is my understanding that any algae is good as long as it is in the fuge and not in the DT to soak up any unwanted nutrients ( trates, phates, etc..) I might be wrong though...been known to happen from time to time.............

Ive read people running 24/7, helps control and Maintain PH fluxuations I dont know what other benefits are. But since PODS are more nocturnal it doesnt seem natural to me to run it 24/7. my fuge is 5g.

Wow, so you are giving 6 watts per gallon? Is there such a thing as over light in saltwater? I know if I put 6 Watts per gallon for freshwater, there will be lots of algae problems. Thanks for sharing, miaHeat.

If your running just chaeto in the tank you could use something as simple as those aluminum clipon works lamps with an standard screw in bulb, a friend of mine has used one for years on his chaeto fuge tank... I run the 2x9w 6500k (6500k is closer to sunlight than 10k) on my tank and it's counter to DT....You can over saturate a tank with too much oxygen if you run the chaeto lights 24/7....Plus chaeto, just like any other plant needs dark time to recover...If you run the lights 24/7 the cheato will stop growing and turn a deep. dark green and get real curly..

Sorry to restart this thread after a while, After reading more about refugium, I have more questions.
So actinic light are useless for refugium? In that case, I am just curious what are actinic light useful for? corals only? Thanks in advance.

just get ya a power compact with 10 k's and run it 24/7. If you dont want to spend the $$ for a power compact you cna use one of the round aluminum clip on work lights with a screw type flourescent, a 6700 k would be great. The k rating is listed on the package on the new flouro's. Doesn't look as pretty, but it does the same thing as far as algae growth and ph stabilization.

its not a good idea to run lights on 24/7. that is not healthy for whatever is going to go in there. if your worried about pH staying stable then run the lights on opposing schedules

I have ran mine 24/7 for a year with no problems at all.

i run my two 25w 6500k bulbs opposite the DT. i keeps the ph level and the macro has time to recover when the DT lights are on.

I run my fuge on opposite cycle as the DT also.t just seems like a waste of electricity to run it full time.To each there own,I suppose. My lights BTW is the Nova 2x24w T5(10k,actinic)...prolly change out the actinic with a 6500k here soon.

Thanks everyone for your replies, but can someone explain to me about what actinic lights are useful for beside corals? Thanks.
