"I was wondering what kind of lighting to use for a reef tank and the sand i will need"
That is a very open ended question that is extremely difficult to answer. There are countless possibilities...what it comes down to is what you hope to build. Your lighting and filtration will be determined by the type of corals and/or fish you wish to keep. Provide some info and choices and folks here can start to help answer your questions. The options are virtually limitless in regard to lighting source and sand type...
...but definitely welcome to the forum...best of luck as you develope your system...and keep us posted as it progresses.

Hi

What type of substrate are you using now? Sand? Crushed coral?
IMO, Someone steered you a little wrong with your fish selection. In general, tangs will not do well in a 50g. While your yellow may be OK in the short term, I would advise you to avoid a regal. They are very large when full grown and require far more space.

i hope that isnt the tang police im hearing ;) j/k yeah tangs need alot of space to roam and graze. 75 is the recomended and highly debated over minimal tank size for a tang.

Somebody had to say it. First hand experience with a tang in a 55 taught me it just doesn't work. If trying to save a fish and a hobbyist from stress makes me the tang police, then I guess I'll take my badge and be on my way. :D

Is this the grain size and texture of sand? If so, it sounds good. If it's larger, like pebbles, then not so good.
In regards to the fish recommendations, my advice would be to look into a good book or two. Some good ones to consider:
Marine Fishes by S. Michael
The Contientious Marine Aquarist by R. Fenner
The New Marine Aquarium by M. Paletta
Basically I would avoid tangs, large angels, butterflies, puffers, triggers. Most of those would not be reef-safe anyway.
