what kind of snail is this?

I bought a used tank about 6 weeks ago and it was set up and running. It came with some small snails but recently my kids and I noticed a larger snail come up from under the gravel. He has a long trunk (like an elephant) that he sticks up in the air. His shell is oblong and he floats over the top of the gravel as he moves. Anyone know what he is? I have looked in my books but don't see anything like him.

Sounds like a nassarious snail to me. The "trunk" gives em away. Good little sand cleaning snail.

could be a conch of some kind too, maybe...which are great to have also, unless they get too big & clumsy w/ thing in the tank

Need more details. I would guess some type of Whelk (includes Nassarius). But Nassarius is a really good guess IMO.

i doubt it is a conch, they do ot move that fast as too seem to float. Nassarius on the other hand do.
as well the trunk sticking UP is another good sign, althoguh conchs have long ones, they move them around in the sand, not up in the air(so to speak)
