I think it really depends on the tap water. Some cities put a lot more chemicals than others and that can affect your tank. For example, when we bought our house we had to sign a waver stating that we understood that the water here has high arsenic levels and that we should use it at our own risk...
RO water has little to no TDS and from my understanding that's a good thing. But if you've had good luck with tap... by all means...
)

the amount of tds can lead to algae explosions(might take a while) for one. you can get a tds meter to test the quality. I had to buy a ro unit after testing the water here.

Some metals that might be in your water are almost impossible to get out of your tank.
I used to use tap and had algae problems so I switched to those Glacier machines where you can fill your own jugs and it works great!

Tap water can have all kinds of impurities in it that fall within EPA guidelines as nontoxic to humans, but which are toxic and/or detrimental to the critters we keep. Dissolved organics (nitrates, phosphates and silicates in particular) will lead to algae blooms as stated upthread. Dissolved heavy metals can kill your invertebrates, and are not particularly good for fish.

why is tap water not good to use.
Tap water is actually quite allright. The trick is to put enough water to vinegar ratio. Vinegar will lenghten a fish's life by up to 25%. It's really quite remarkable. It also has other advantages

You've got it vinegar mixed up with salt. Slat is what you should be putting in the tank as it would replicate their natural environment of sea water.

That's interesting. I've not heard of that one. Must read up on it, but in many ways it makes a lot of sense

Ok, the immaturity is gone now. Thank the mods.
To answer you question, many people don't use tap water because tap water has all kinds of minerals and chemicals in it that we can't test for etc. Thats why Ro-Di water is so recommended. Its the most pure that you can find/make.
