What should I know before I get a tank

what kind of tank do you want? fowlr, reef, mixed coral, hard coral, softies. each set up is different as far as water parameters, flow, and lighting. you can find all you need to know here and on other sites. the main thing is when you do decide to start, take it slow. nothing good happens in this hobby by rushing. patience is probably the hardest think to overcome.

Best thing to do is start reading books about saltwater tanks just to see if your up to the challenge of a saltwater tank. It takes a lot of dedication and patience.

"Saltwater tanks for dummies" is a very good book to start with. I should know, that's what I started with. You can find it at your local library if you don't want to invest in one. I later bought one of my own.

"Marine Aquarium Hand book. Beginner to breeder" by Martin A. Moe is another good book. I got mine at Petsmart.

I read both of these cover to cover before I started doing more research.

Now, needless to say, I'm addicted to it.

Welcome to saltwaterfish.com. Hands down, the best place I've found for info and help.

Well I want a reef tank with soft corals with that there will be fish and a few invertebrates but first I will start out slow with most of my corals that I heard our good beginner corals and start out with the easiest fish to take care of and after I get more experience I will get more advanced fish.So all I have is a few soft corals a easy fish to take care of and many have a invertebrate.

I pretty much know how much effort it will be to get this thing up and going especially that I have school but I have a parent that used to be into this very much but had to get rid of it. I have also done a lot of research because I don't want to spend that much money on books when I'm saving up on the fish tank and fish and all the stuff I need so i'm just trying to get as much off of the internet as I can.

Then it looks like you know what your getting into and have gone the saltwater route before. Sorry to hear that your parent got rid of his/her tank and equipment. It would have helped to get you started again.

Keep digging in the internet as much as you can. I take articals and websites that I like and find useful and save them to my computer for future reference. Some I've even printed some out and started a loose leaf binder book. As far as buying books goes, you can find some of them at the library so you don't have to buy them.

And keep asking questions. Sure as shootin' somebody here knows the right answer. However, you'll find that different people have different answers to the same questions. Not that any of the answers are wrong. Different answers can produce the same results. You just have to decide which answer works for your situation.

Thanks for the advice siverado61 but I haven't ever gotten a saltwater fish tank ever before the longest I've ever had a fish was about 6 years it was a freshwater goldfish named nemo he lived in a fish tank bowl. I just know what i'm getting into and I learned a lot about fish. And I also have another question about the filtration what do you do because all the websites I've read have confused me.

Filtration pretty much depends on what size tank and what your putting in it. It could be as simple as a hang on the back filter or as complex as a sump/ refugium with protein skimmer, algae scrubber and so on.

Hi, LOL...All you NEED to know...is that it isn't cheap.

As for not needing any books, I'm sorry dear but knowledge increases as time goes on, and there is new equipment and better methods, your parent who used to be into it doesn't know as much as you may think....we NEVER stop leaning, there is always something new. The internet is helpful, you found this site so you are already ahead of the game...but books is still the best place to find information.

Knowledge FIRST. The more you know the greater the success and the lesser the expense.

Why don't you summarize what you know about setting up a simple reef tank and how you plan to go about setting it up. Maybe we can fill in what you need to consider.
