For mine I have a maxijet 900 pump, which replaced the crappy pump in the back chambers. I also have a koralia 1. Works well, I have places with high, medium and low flow, which is exactly what I wanted. Could always just do a koralia nano too.

Koralia nano or a 1 depends on how much flow you want..They have a nicer flow and look alot nicer as well.

I never even thought of replacing the back-chamber pump with a better one! If I put a big one back there would that keep me from having to put one in the DT?

Depends again on how much flow you want. The way I have mine set-up is the return nozzle (the piece in the display where the water comes out of) is pointed towards the surface to break any film and to keep my ph stable. Then I have a K1, on the opposite side aimed across the tank. When the two currents collide with each other I get some good random flow.
One of the reasons I replaced that back pump was because I wanted to increase the current in the back chambers. I keep chaeto in chamber 2 so I wanted pretty good current moving through it. Let me know if you need a better explanation

My 12g is currently just a FOWLR, so I only replaced the PH in the back chamber with a MJ600.
I also added a second nozzle to the return line that shoots across the back of the tank, behind the LR, so nothing settles back there (including the fish).
I used to have a second PH in the front section before I replaced the one in the back, but it looked terrible, and needed to be cleaned weekly. This is much more aesthetically pleasing.

Awesome, thank you for the very clear explanation. If you don't mind I'll probably copy your set up - I like the idea of the collision-caused water movement.
You say "it depends on how much flow I want" but therein lies the problem.... I don't KNOW how much flow I want! This will be my first shot at a reef tank so I guess it depends on what type of livestock I have in there. At this point, nothing, since I am cycling. I guess it will be important to arrange things so that I have a little of each, low, medium and high flow. Kinda covers all bases.
Thank God for you guys!

Sue,
I am going to add a korilla 1 to my tank as well. I have my return nozzle pointed to the top or surface as well. I love coming on this board and getting people's ideas. Just remember it's your tank.
