my wife came running in the house .one of our dogs found this walking across the yard. it is almost the size of my fist. looks like a trianchala of some type. i put him in my 540 gallon tank i have sitting outside with a 5 gallon bucket layed on its side and a short bowl of water. any idea what kind of spider this is. i have a 55 gallon tank in storage i would love to keep him but have no clue what he eats and if he can climb out of the tank?

Just a standard tarantula. I stop and shush them off the highway during the summer. They can't climb glass. But it'd be better if you let him go eat crickets and small lizards in the wild. They are harmless to humans, though they try to bluff you into thinking they are ferocious. My kids growing up here in Arizona loved to pick them up and carry them around. They can bite with their front fangs, but only the biggest can penetrate skin and its' venom is far too weak to cause even a small red bump-and they rarely try to bite something as big as a human.

The only desert critter I kill is the Mojave rattlers. Any other snake, spider or scorpion gets a pass. They just live and let live. I don't even hurt diamondbacks. Give them a wide berth and they will leave you alone.

yea i dont kill any creature unless i have too. he is hiding in the tank between the water bowl and 5 gallon bucket.i will probably just take him to my land and let him go. he is pretty cool though but i will need my 55 tank for a qt soon. pretty cool to see this thing though.
