Ugh.
Early on in this hobby I got a blue hippo tang. It came down with ich, and died. I only Q'd him for about a week and half. The tank was only a handful of months old. Lesson learned--or so I thought.
Now I've added another one, this time to a system that has been up for more than 2 years (as a reef for about 10 months)
The tank parameters are perfect. I Q'd the blue for about 3 weeks, maybe a day or two more. He was doing great, and no signs of ich. No problem now, I thought. Ha. I put him in the display tank...and in less than two days, ICH.
I haven't had ich in forever, now I have to deal with it AGAIN. I can't believe these fish.

Sorry to hear of your trouble getting a healthy hippo to adjust to your system. The best method is to Quarentine them(which you've done)...I kept mine in quarentine for about 5 weeks before adding him to my display. Also they may suffer from the stress of relocation and/or stress from other fish in the same system(which can cause increased suceptability to parasites). Now that yours has ick there is little you can do other than treat it for the parasite. You may want to post over in the disease and treatment forum for help in that area. Just out of curiosity...what size is the display and what other fish are with your tang?

Thanks. I'm not too worried about it. I'm more just venting about this fish!
I run UV in my tank, and the hippo is back in QT. If it happens again, though, he's going back to the store...and that will be the last time I deal with a hippo.
Display is a 75E reef. The blue is about one inch.
Also have a 1.5" yellow, 2" sailfin, 1" skunk clown, 2" dusky jawfish.

I cannot stress or recommend garlic extreme enough. My Kole tang was on his death bed with ich when I got back from Flordia(figures, housesitter:rolleyes: ) along with a couple of my other fish. So I decided to use Garlic Extreme and in the matter of a week all signs of ich are gone and with daily usage of the garlic never came back. Just my experience with ich and this particular product.

Good stuff. Am using it now. I also have some Tetra Parasite food (no longer in production...some stores still have a stock, though) which works well with the Garlic.

Garlic doesn't exactly "prevent" diseases and parasites. It does seem to help stimulate appitite and boost immune systems.Which in turn makes fish less likely to have problems with either. I have added garlic on a regular basis for over two years and I'm confident it helps.
One of the moderators over in the disease and treatment forum recently published a article on another product that is reported to be much more effective than garlic...try to search for the following topic:

For ICH theres no substitute for Hyposalinity.
I was very skeptical of it at first and prefered the chemical route.
After performing it as a last ditch option, I saw dramatic results in less than 12 hours.
It saved all my infected fish except my Powder Blue Tang which caught another wave of ICH after I let the salinity rise above .009 after he was clean.
Hyposalinity is a "natural", chemical free, actual CURE for ICH.
The lower salt relaxes the fish as well due to less osmotic stress.
Garlic, and all the other stuff HELP, but do not actually cure/kill the parasite.
Do a search in the 'Disease and Treatment' forum for "Hyposalinity", this is the only way to go. :)
