What the heck is this?

My friend pulled it out of a lake in jersey...

Looks morayish to me, but this is a freshwater lake! To add to the confusion, he has seen about 15 or so of these guys!
Any clue guys?
We are 95% sure its not an American eel.
Best bet so far:
Graboid tongue.

I would hope it's not a water mocassin... Don't those come out of water and are very poisonous?? It does look like a moray. I have seen freshwater morays in a lfs that look just like this except grey. Well at least they call them morays...
maybe they get more of a brownish when they get older??

fresh water eel(least thats what we always called em and it linda makes since cuz it's a eel that lives in fresh water LOL)..they are pretty common in south Ga where im from.
They are just nasty looking. If it was a water moccasin it would be grey and your freind would be in the hospital right now wishing he wouldnt tried to catch you a thing to take a picture of to post on SWF.

If it is a fresh water eel, as we all think it is, you should clean it, smoke it and eat it. It is a delicassy in the Netherlands, where I am from. Over there they pay like $11 for HALF A POUND.
That stuff is very tasty and very expensive.

I wouldn't know. I never had BBQed eel. I did have a load of smoked eel and I tell you right now, when I go back to Holland, that would probably the first thing I am gonna eat there...lol

It kind of resembles a Ropefish Eel. I used to see those all the time in Jersey. We used to hit the camping grounds in the mountains and there was all sorts of stuff in those lakes.

You're kidding? Never heard of the movie "Tremors"? Worm like things in the ground start coming up and eating people. They use their tongues to smell and taste...
I thought the joke was pretty funny myself...
