i barely used any tap water in my tank and im getting cyano. this is terrible. last tank i had took months of tap water to start with the cyano. now only 2 weeks into the cycle and it starts. when my sump gets up and running will this be elimaneted. i will not use tap water anymore. RO/DI water from the LFS. now there is no fish in the tank. what can i do to get rid of it. the lights are on for only about 7 hours a day.

You are experincing "diatoms". EVERY tank does no matter the water used. It's called new tank syndrom.

so i shouldnt do anything than. i didnt now that saltwater tanks go threw the new tank syndrom like fresh water. should i get the red slime remover or somethings.

Stay away from chemicals as much as you can. If it is just new tank sydrome. Just give it time to pass. Do your water changes and check the flow of your powerheads to make sure there are no dead spots.
If it is from the tap water. You may have a high level of phosphates. I would run some phos ban to help with this, and start useing RO water.

RO/DI i am going to use from now on. yeah some phos ban should work. i have two 600 gph powerheads facing each other. slightly off set. i have two return pipes from a Mag12. so out of that i should be getting about 900 to a 1000 gph. and last i have 4 powerheads that push 100 gph each. havent put them in yet and dont know where to put them. i have a 125 gallon tank, 150 lbs live sand, 200 lbs live rock.

I would say do a water change, get the phosban running just in case it is a phosphate problem, and let your tank do the rest.

Make sure you have sufficient flow across your tank bottom as well. Cyano likes dead spots.

I would also run tests on the water you are getting from the LFS. I had the same issue at one time and the LFS water had a high phos level.

Is your tank fully cycled? If not, I wouldn't do anything until your tank is cycled, water change will slow down the cycle. Diatoms are normal, you should be fine. I wouldn't use lights, no need till after its cycled.

I had a bad case of Cyno in my 220 FOWLR several months ago. It was covering my LR (200#s) and my entire sand bed. I tried everything to get rid of it from adjusting powerheads to feedings and even cutting back on lighting. All of my water came from an RO/DI so tap water was not an issue. I finally used Maracyn for freshwater and that cleared it all up in 3-4 days with no side effects. I used 1 crushed up tablet for every 10 gallons of system water and added it diretly to the tank. The tank is going strong now but like I said, this was a FOWLR.

This was all on a fully cycled tank. Still not sure was caused the outbreak.

i'll wait and see. and i dont usually put the lights on. but my girl friend puts the lights on as soon as she gets home from work.
