My 30 gallon is starting to develop small patches of reddish/brown residue on the filter housing and on a few spots of glass?
Is this algae? Rust? Fish dooey?

Diatoms... they'll subside as the tank matures.
The best way to eliminate them, is to use RO/DI water rather than regular tap water.

Most LFS sell RO/DI water, some grocery stores do, but you may want to look into buying a unit if you have a tank that is over 50gal.

RO/DI water is the Reverse Osmosis DeIonized drinking water that comes in the big 5 gallon jugs. Grab a couple of em from any grocery store and refill em when they're empty.
