Hello all, i just got home with my first porcupine. He is sclightly over an inch and is gorgeous. He is extremely active already in my tank. My question is what can i feed this amazing fish? Shrimp? Brine? Krill? What do you all think?

I noticed you are from AZ . . . the Phoenix area? Did you buy your porky locally? If so, where?
I haven't kept one, but I'd suggest a meaty diet. He might not eat for a day or two as he adjusts to his new home.
In the future, I'd suggest researching before buying to make sure that the new purchase will do ok in your tank and with the other fish in the tank.
Good luck! :D

yeah, i do live in north phx. I bought it at tropical treasures. i looked into getting 1 for about 2 weeks, the only thing i didnt research is feeding. so thats what i am up 2 now. Any suggestions or raw/cooked shrimp, krill, etc, as far as a meaty diet?

I had a Hawaiian spotted puffer for a while that LOVED krill. He showed no interest in cockle (which I feed my cc star).
I'm in north Phoenix too! You know where Tramonto is? Shoot me an email and we can discuss the LFS in the area, etc.

I think (though I could be wrong) you could use freshwater ghost shrimp for food. The sell them at the new WalMart on Happy Valley Road pretty cheap.
edit: I think you could also purchase a fish filet from the meat department of the grocery store, cut it into cubes, then freeze it. I know someone who did this for their cc star and said it worked great.

ghost shrimp wont' live very long in salt water and your porcupine fish may not eat right a way they can be hard to feed i would try the ghost shrimp for now but i would try to find salt water feeder shrimp. i wolr at a pet store and some times its awfully hard to get them to eat. as for the fish filet i wouldn't try until he is eating steady and well adjusted.

i fed mine krill, clam, and silversides. the occasional feeder fish. these guys will eat pretty much anything. make sure it's a meaty but you are also gonna have to get some veggie in their diet somehow. these guys get veggie matter from the prey that they eat. also you might want to feed a snail here and there to help keep the teeth from over growing.

just as long as he eats, many of the ones that we get in the pet shop won't eat non moving things for a week or two and like i said the ghost shrimp wont live very long in salt water. once he is aclimated to you he hsould feen on anyhting that you put in the tank. good luck keeping him fed.

I had a porc, he loved Brine. Also weekly I would buy a couple snails and throw them into the tank. Next morning there would be nothing but broken shells.

The porc puffer that I used to have would only eat a certain brand of frozen brine shrimp. Everyone told me that he would eat anything, but I evidentally got the finicky one! When my lfs had trouble getting in the right brand, my little guy went on a hunger strike. I was really sad when he outgrew his tank and I had to turn him in. He was the greatest fish ever!
