What should I mix my saltwater in? I have read that some plastic trash cans or tote will leach chemicals in the water. Is this true? Where would I find food service totes? Can I just buy a name brand like Rubbermaid and be safe? What do you all mix water in?
Some use 5 gallon buckets (depending on amount of water changes) and some use the rubbermaid trashcans. Just be sure to wash it with water and vinegar and rinse well. Also make sure that mixing is all you use it for. You don't want to use a bucket or such that has been used for other things that had soaps for example in them.
I use a 35 gallon Rubbermaid Brute container from Home Depot. It cost a bit more but worth it. the cheaper ones you will need to reinforce with duct tape wrapped around. The water is pretty heavy when you get to larger amounts and the container walls need to be able to hold it.
I used to use the 5 gallon paint buckets you can also get from Home Depot since I just do 10 gallon water changes but it got to cumbersome.
I cut a hole in the middle of the lid so I could run the electric cords for the pumps, heater and the tubing for pumping. whenever my tank is ready for the water I just hang the tube in the sump and turn the pump on.
Get a few new plastic buckets for HOme Depot or buy some Rubber maid or sterilite containers from Wally world. I use 7 gal buckets with screw on lids that originally held pool chemicals. ONce rinsed and exposed to air they are perfectly safe and the buckets hold 2 gal more than typical plastic buckets do plus the lids are screw on, and they stack up so space is not taken up with storage of lots of air!
Anything thats large enough and wont react with salt water (i.e metal) and non toxic will work. I use a couple brown Rubbermaid trash cans and a wooden boat oar to mix it up.
