I am going to test for iodine and magnisium also. Just ordered the test kits yesterday.
I think you have all the basics though. Adding additives is something everyone cannot agree on. It really depends on you, what you have in your tank, how often water changes are done , etc, etc, etc.
I am just getting into this after 4 years,

But i am learning,:D

went to lfs to get iodine and magnesium test kit, but sorta hesitant to buy it, since i dont know how critical is it to monitor these levels. i usually do a 20% water change every week, but going cut back to every 2 weeks.

I test Ca, alk, SG, and temp on a regular basis. Every now and then Ill test for nitrates and phosphates. I keep other test kits on hand just in case.
Dad, Ive been adding iodine to my tanks twice a week for years, and wanted to test for it, but after doing a bit of research and trying the salifert kit out, I have decided its not worth it, I tried the test several times and could never get a clear reading, and all of the research I did stated that the kits that are available to hobbyists are not at all accurate. The addition of iodine is a matter of opinion, some say its benificial, some say it makes no difference, some say its harmful. I would suggest you read up on it, use several sources, try it out and decide for yourself. I might mention that I add iodine in the form of lugols solution strong iodine, which is quickly turned into iodide, which can be added as potassium iodide. Lugols is used to promote healing and the prevention of infection, PI is said to promote growth and color but whether any of that is fact or fiction may never be determined. HTH
