Depends on what *you* want. Do you want to have lots of corals in your tank--e.g. a reef tank? Or do you want mostly saltwater fish with a little LR for decoration?

if ya decide to go with a seahorse then no other fish can go cept maybe a clown. The seahorses are to timid towards feeding and will starve if other fish are in the tank. Hehe I've learned real quick to check the types of fish for associating with each other first.
Anyways Welcome to the board and good luck

Wow, I hate to start out by downing some of them but if you plan to have corals in your tank then I would not put a raccoon butterfly in your tank because they will eat your corals. As for copperband butterflies they are extremely delicate and do not have a very good survival rate. The clownfish are a good idea but make sure when you purchase them that they come as a pair. Ok next, the longnose hawkfish is a really cute fish with a great personality but be careful I've heard of incidences where they have eaten crustaceans in aquariums. The seahorse, though very popular to many, is a very delicate species. They are often hard to feed unless you purchase them pretty big and it is really not a good idea to put them with other fish because they are such slow eaters there are greater chances they will starve.

I haven't started the tank, just wondering what fish I should get. It would be nice to have a reef aquarium-55g that is

It's always a good idea to do a little homework on each fish. They do "look" interesting for sure .... but in addition to looking cool, many species have special diets and water quality requirements.
Some get along well with other fish and inverts, while other's will not.
Some species grow huge very fast, and others remain relatively small. You get the picture ;)
Before making any hard decisions - I'd suggest either getting a couple good marine tank books, or hit the library, or better yet research them on the net.
If this 55 is your first tank - I'd hold off on the butterfly's and skip the seahorses.
Surfin Sam made an excellent point as well.
EDIT: you guys replied so fast there was only one reply when I started LOL -- all great advise.

I have read several places that seahorses like a pond environment better. If youre using a decent waterfloew in your tank... which you should for corals, then I would suggest passing on the seahorse.. Like they say its VERY delicate. But, One thing I learned is that somehow somewhere someone has done just about everything and had success. All animals are different and most opinions are general as to the odds. for example, some people have trouble with emerald crabs, some don't. Read all you can and good luck.

well... the pond thing.. sorry about that... not sure that's what its called, but by that I mean they do very well in waters with a lot of plant life.

Phytoplankton is food for filterfeeders like sponges, and alot of corals. You have to add it to the tank as regularly as you would feed a normal fish.

it is sort of nice to have a little of fish and corals so you might not need so many fish i that aquarium because they might fight over space.
