Personally I don't use anything to assist my filtration other than carbon & phosphate sponge once a month for 24-48 hours. Even with fresh water systems I never used chem guard. I'd say that if there is no need or purpose then I'd seriously consider futher research.......may not help much but its a start....*_^

Well judging by the looks of youre tank certainly has worked wonderfully. you only change youre water once amonth? I thought most people do it weekly? i do mine once a month. I have always used carbon in my freshwater only because its what lfs said to do same with chemie pure. Im not much of a reader, should be would help, Although now that i have found this site i read posts all the time thank you alot for youre input.

I change about 40 gallons once a month also. I do not use any filter addatives at all. I ran carbon but have not used it in a while.
When I set up my first reef my arm and all sorts of chemicals and pads were in my tank all the time. I have since learned that minimal is better when it comes to adatives. I like the natrual approach. I do have a calcium reactor and a skimmer and thats it.
Since I have learned to leave my tank alone it has been much healthier and corls grow better.

The biggest problem with Chemi-Pure is the price.
It can polish your water pretty well and take the yellow out.
I used Chemi-Pure, but I have heard that Black Diamond is as good and cheaper. And it can be reused after rinsing!
Unless you got some ozone action going on, you really don't need stuff like this, but it is nice IMO.
