what type of base to use

I'm starting my first SW tank, it's 50g, I'm planning on 40-50 lbs LR, and was curious as to any benefits of using crushed coral over very fine sand, and live sand isn't necessarily something I'm interested in money-wise (I'm on a budget). Will basteria begin to colonize in the fine sand eventually? ANy help would be great - thanks

40-50 lbs of LR will be quite $$$. Don't go cheap on the substrate. It's just as important as the LR. I think saltwater and budget shouldn't be used in the same sentence!! Patience is the key. Do sand now instead of crushed coral. You'll thank us later. Trust me. Good luck. COOP.

I recommend Seaflor aragonite gravel, it may help in buffering ph and calcium where CC will not. It also has the grain size I believe is the best all around choice.
CC is usually to large a grain size, trapping waste that eventually contributes to a nitrate source.
LR will eventually contribute enough microorganisms to make dry gravel LS over a few weeks.
