what type of clowns do we have?

The LFS we bought these from when we knew nothing about fish told us that they were Percula's, but I really think they're Ocelarris. Can someone definitively tell us what they are?

Well, from what i have learned. the true percs have more black and it sometimes covers lg areas of the fish, whereas false percs (or ocellaris) have more of a black outline to the stripes. also tank bred false percs have brighter coloration. I would go to {EDIT LINK}, look under marine fishes, then clowns, and it shows you the two clowns and you can see the difference. hope this helps.

yes false percs and ocellaris are the same thing, i just put both names down for it. alot of pet stores call them percs without telling the false part.

The one LFS that we got these from always gives us false information, but unfortunately has the nicest looking fish (and most expensive!). They hire McDonald's fry boy rejects to help customers.

thanks for your help

too bad they didnt have a platinum clown for sale there and didnt know any better. HAHA
I tried telling them that their Yellow Belly Hippo was sick and that Hippos got yellow bellies if not cared for properly and that I'd take the chance putting him in my QT, but it didn't work

It was worth a shot. This place charges outrageous prices for their fish ($40 for a baby clown, $90 for a small Coral Beauty).

BTL, you have 2 perculas. Easy give away is the eyes. Perculas have black centers with an orange ring. Ocellaris clowns have almost all black eyes. I agree that they probably should have more black on the body, but judging from the pic, they look 1.5"-2" max, so they should develop some more coloration, well the female at least.

Never knew that about the eyes... Based on countless photos, hers does still to me look like tank bred false percs based on their brighter colors, minus the more pronounced black of true percs...I guess when they get bigger you will know for sure.

Yes, they are babies, they're actually a year old today! I never knew about the eyes either, thanks!

They are tank bred, that I'm positive of. The LFS that I bought these guys from only deals with tank bred and raised. The owner is really against captive caught fish and goes off on a rampage if you even dare to ask. They're extremely bright orange, more so than I've seen any other fish at any of my LFS's, whether Ocellaris or False Perc's, so I've had a hard time determining what I actually have.
Part of the reason I want to know is because we just upgraded to a 155G and were thinking about trying to add two more, I guess we won't.

Can you get a better picture? How many dorsal spines do they have?

I'll see what else I have on my camera, it's hard to get a clear picture of them since they never EVER stop moving. We just moved them into a 155G yesterday so they're hiding now, AND DESTROYING MY NEW RBTA!!!!
