What type of mushroom?

I'm looking to purchase a hearty mushroom for my FOLR 125gal tank. My lighting only consists of 2 each actinic 03's and 2 each 10,000K. I'm not experienced at all in mushrooms or corals nor do I wish to get into corals. I'm just looking to toy around with some shrooms! Any ideas out there?

Any mushroom will probably be fine.
Depending on lighting lots of stuff will be fine.
2-actinic
2-10K
What kind of lights? PC?and what wattage?
Probably doesn't matter much for mushrooms, but when looking for advice this information is important.

You would be pretty hard pressed to try and finds a shroom that will not grow with the lighting yu have....most all of them are hardy and easy keepers as well..BTW A shroom is a coral......Just place what ever you get in a low to med flow area, and let it be. Some flow but not a lot is desireable.

They are all easy keepers Bunny.Just go to your lfs or online and look ansd see what strikes yur fancey..........The designer colors like reds and some electric blues are more expensive as are ricordea florida and yuma, but the regular old run of the mill shroooms which are so common place all have lots of good colors to them as well.....(not good with scientific names) but color makes no difference in it being easy to keep. Its just more money for deco colors all because of demand.

Chipmaker---that's the problem, my LFS doesn't carry them I have to order them If then I can even get them. My LFS is telling me they are risky to have cause if they die, they will skunk your whole tank??? BTW--what do they eat?

Bunny I have some I'll give you if you can wait ...I'm getting bigger tank this weekend and it will probably be 1 - 2 weeks before I change over. But they do multiply and I even have some down behind and under the rocks. Any way I'll be digging some out if you're interested send me your address to rcounts@pbtcomm.net
But like I say it will be a week or two

Mine do well with frozen foods, formula 1 & 2. I have to place it by their mouths and hold it for a second, they are not sticky so it will float away. The guy I bought mine from was feeding it something similar, he had lots of babies and needed to thin them out. Some of the brighter colored ones are very expensive as stated, mine are florecent green and purple hairy mushrooms..not the prettiest but I love them. You will love mushrooms, they really make up a tank..I just got a neon blue one from the same person..he's so cute. When you first get them they will look aweful, slimy looking but in a few days they really put on a show. They produce a little slime but nothing to worry about. That is my experience with them, I haven't had them very long and there are others on here that can tell you more. Good luck and you won't be sorry.

I suppose if left in there too long..just like any animal. You will know when they are in trouble, they will get limp and shriveled and probably produce alot of slime. I'm just learning about them, but I think I read that somewhere on here. Someone will be along to let you know about that. I wish I could find a good book on Mushrooms..I have several on Anemone and clownfish, natural reef aquariums, Fw fish. But I'd like to get a couple specializing in mushrooms and corals. Good luck getting one..you can try the famous auction site also, thats where I got mine..for alot less than any LFS. I'd rather get my stock from fellow hobbiests...atleast you know they are taking care of the animals:)

Mushrooms are pretty tough to kill..in fact you can chop them up and they live. I have even nuked a few w/ Joe's ..they won't do anything to your tank. When considering keeping corals, you need to learn about Alkalinity and calcium levels. If you like the big green ones..order some frilly shrooms. Purple and red ones are nice. Tongan shrooms are more fuzzy. There are also hairy shrooms. These are all mostly common names. Just stay away from elephant ears, they can lure fish and eat them.
