Will you hear Michael Buffer say " Lady's and Gentlemen , Lets get ready to RUMBLE" ?
the stronger corals will expell their guts on the weaker corals digesting them causing them to die and to leave a skeleton of the weak coral. The stronger coral will then procede with its growing.
while some of what is being said is true,
Many times the corals will maintain a specified area. For Example I have some GSP that were growing rapidly towards my mushrooms. Then one day I noticed that GSP had stopped growing in that direction. Sometimes the corals just get a no man's land dead zone between them.
I forgot to mention that the corals do sense other corals, so if they aren't aggresive(sounds funny worrying about a coral being aggressive, anyways back to subject) they will just stop like KrazeKajin stated.
