What would happen if I added sand to CC

I have CC in my tank now and would like to add sand. It isn't alive anymore, so I was wondering what would happen to the tank if I added it over the top of the CC. I didn't really want to take out the CC because it is well cycled. can someone offer some advice to this question. The reason I want to add the sand is because the CC has alot of coraline on it and it look dirty. my goby will atleast keep the sand clean..

the sand will shake to the bottom of the tank and the cc will raise to the top
