OK I have a 50 gallon sw tank with a large amount of live rock.
Fish are now.
Royal Gramma
Flame Angel
High Fin Goby (looks similar to tiger goby)
Question is, I bought the flatpack formua 1 and 2 frozen foods and my Grama and Angel are both picking away at those foods. I haven't seen my Goby do much eating in the tank. I have had him for just a few days.
Im concerned about the goby, not eating so well, is there a particular kind of food he would eat? I know he would eat live brine but that food is in short supply and almost always out of stock. Its just not practical. I would prefer to use a frozen food or I have also feed my fish dried seaweed attached to a small rock.
Second question is, I am seriously considering buying a reef kit that has a bunch of snails, shrimp and hermit crabs. Which should do a good job of cleaning up the tank. However I'm concerned about the available sources of food.
I raised a flame angel that only ate off the live rock for more than a year. I had not given food for more than a year and he survived just fine until I introduced 3 turbo snails into the tank. THey took care of the snails but it also took away lots of the food the fish would pick off the live rock, he finally died.
Im keeping all my live rock, but I am converting to a more fish tank meaning that I will have to feed my fish regularly. Im concerned that adding the reef kit will take away all the food source off the rocks and starve the goby. I would like to find something my goby can eat so I can still add a bunch of crabs and snails as planned.

Hi-fin Gobies are Predators. Have you seen it open its mouth all the way yet???
If it were mine (I have one :D ) I would feed it Amphipods and shaved Scallops. Frozen Mysis Shrimp are readily available and will work equally well.
In my Experience Hi-Fin Gobies require a Pistol Shrimp. Without a Pistol Shrimp you should probably provide it a cave of some type. A 3/4" PVC pipe will work if you can't make on out of rock.

the goby has ample caves. There are quite a few rocks an hiding places for him to comfortably hide. In fact its not uncommon for all 3 fish to be hidden.
THis guy is white with yellow stripes and a black dot on his top fin. Its some sort of speciied of high fin goby. Can't remember which one.

Well, the Hi-Fin Gobies I'm familiar with are White with Black diagonal Stripes. That's the problem with common names i guess.
The Gobies I'm talking about like to live in caved dug out of the sand. Unfortunately they can't dig so they seek the expertise of a Pistol Shrimp.

hi,
i have a 55 gallon tank with lots of snails and hermits, a lawnmower blenny, a bicolor blenny and a blue tang, all of which are tremendous algae eaters,( i also have a clown a mandarin, a 3 spot damsel and a blue velvet) after the tank got really clean, i put a vegetable clip in the tank (available at pet stores) and let them get used to it, now about every 3rd day i put a 3" peice of algae sheet in there and they gobble it up. as small as your gobie is he will probably be fine, i have a yellow clown goby and he seems to like the flake the best. alot of my fish took a few days to eat, he will probably be ok. just make sure when you buy fish you see them eat at the pet shop so you know they are adjusting well!!
good luck
