sometimes problems wont go away by trying to run away. There is probably a drug problem in ST. Marteen also. I've been there also and I know there is definately an alchohol problem and STD problem also. I agree with volunteerg, talk to someone like a counselor at school.... they're there to talk to. Hang in there!

Being a parent myself to a 17 yr old, and also 2 out of school now, I am troubled by your post. No child should have to feel they have to get away from home! Can't you talk this all over with your parents? If not you need to talk to someone else who can give you sound advice. What about college? you can go to one outside your home town, please consider an education, its important!

Join the Marines. You will become part of life long fraternity and most likely see parts of the world no travel agent even thinks of. You will learn discipline and other life skills that will give you an unimaginable advantage over others when you return to civilian life.
When I was your age my parents tried to nudge me in this direction and often stated that one year mandatory service should be required of all males when turning 18. I thought they were nuts.
I now know that they were right on target and if this were the case in this country it would go a long way in solving many of our social problems.
Whoever said "all I needed to know about life I learned in kindergarten" was obviously never in the service.
As far as finding yourself in a war zone that is not to worry either because Marines are not allowed to die without permission. This permission is rarely granted and believe me you will not want to upset your DI in any way shape or forum.

OK, take a step back and take a deep breath. First thing you should do is talk to someone. If there is no one at home to talk to try a school counseler or possibly a clergy member. Remember, you don't have to be a church goer to talk to him or her. Most are very good listeners. I too love the carrib. We go every year to Jamaica to vacation and have been all around the area. In my opinion, its a great place to visit, but wouldn't want to live there as I feel there is no better place than the good old USA. There are plenty of other places to go live that are beautiful in the states. Maybe channel your love of your favorite area towards possibly a career in that area, after college of course. With a degree in lets say, marine biology, the sky is the limit to what YOU want to do. Good luck with your decision. Just make sure you think things through completely and have a good solid plan. Just my opinion as a Father I guess. There's that old saying " I felt sorry for myself for having no shoes, til I met a man with no legs". As bleak as you may think things are, you still have advantages many do not have- your future!

Props to you for not being a part of the the meth issue in your town. I grew up in rural Texas and I know exactly what you are talking about.
I think that's a pretty big goal, to up and move to a foreign island away from your home right out of school. Like someone else suggested, either join the military, or go to college. Or even better, join the military and have them pay for your college. Don't rush things, they will fall into place when the time is right. Make a long-term plan for your future and stick to it. Nothing worth having comes fast and easy. Good luck to ya.

Find a college that's at least a few hours from your home town and continue going to school. It will expand your horizons dramatically, give you the potential to earn a great living wherever in the world you want to be (including the Caribbean), and set you up to afford this absurd hobby we all share. Even muddling through a bachelor's degree with relatively mediocre grades will set you up to out-compete most from your meth-laden hometown, and it will permit you never to go back there again if you don't want to. I also like the 'join the military' advice someone gave above. Another great option.
People who run off to the islands and try to make ends meet have a much tougher life than it may appear. Cost of living is high and jobs are scarce in those places.
My two cents.

I agree with Uber. It's everyone's dream to pull himself or herself out of the ---- hole they live in and run off to paradise. The problem is, paradise is not exactly paradise, and it'll kill you even faster if you haven’t established yourself yet. I say, you're only 17. Try to get some higher education, and if you cant afford that then enlist in the military and you'll grow and mature and be put on a path to a great start. Even if you don’t love the military, you don’t have to stay there forever. But while you're there it will establish you, earn you money, train you for a profession, and season you so you wont be trampled over like all those meth losers you're talking about. The point is: Make something of your life, and then go live your dreams.

I've been to those paradise places before. Paradise is paradise because you are on vacation and with money. Try to see how the local REALLY live and you will be appalled. What's wrong with paradise is it gets old real quick and you tend to work when during fun-time... Paradise is no place to live and make a living (Think job, pay, education, relationship, kids). They people that are enjoying paradise are those that are not working....
You never mentioned college. Finish your HS. Goto college somewhere in a larger city somewhat near to beach (FL, CA, TX). It will definitely widen your eyes. This is the U.S.A, the government 'gives' you money to for college. Invest in yourself.

Dont quit on college yet. What you learn in college is not all scholastically... you know, your ABC and 123. You learn how to make friends. How to deal with stress. How to solve problems. How to deal with anal people. How to talk the talk and walk the walk. Dont think you already know it all. You dont.....
You want to be a diving instructor your entire life? You dont want to be run your own dive shop? Have your own dive tour? Have your own peeps obeying your every commands? Well, that's business management... goto college.... Give yourself an opportunity.
