What would YOU do in this situation?

I have finally made the decision.. that everyone that drives, or will drive.. has or will hit something.
I hit,.. a raccoon

My first thoughts (everyone's first thoughts) - OH SHOIT!
Poor little Pontiac Grand Am - Yes.. the shiny red one I posted awhile back.. haven't even had her for a month.
Once again..

But what do you do?
I noticeably* hit the coon.. the whole car shook. (I'm used to big SUV's and Trucks).. I HAD to turn around.. I HATE seeing things like this.. but HAD to turn around,.. to see if it was dead or not.
The answer everyone hopes for -- Please, PLEASE, be dead. It wasn't..
Once again..

What Would YOU Do?
Leave it?
Put it out of misery?
--- I for one.. put it out of misery..

RIP - Indiana Coon

I'm still pretty anal about having stuff in my new/first car, (so no guns, yet) (yes, I'm a hick)
Had no choice..

I don't know why it hit home so much.. I hunt everything..
I just hate hitting them..
A gun is almost instant.. (if you're good)
but a vehicle.. just never seems to manage to do it in one blow..

better than popping the trunk and digging around for something like a Ball Pein Hammer.
All I have in the trunk is jumper cables..
electrocute it?

I dunno, it might work..
AND WATER JUGS FOR MY TANK! IF I DIDN'T HAVE TO GET WATER, THIS WOULD'VE NEVER HAPPENED!!

Gotta have water, though..
"Salt Fish Tank" just doesn't sound right..

Because you have as some like to call a 'conscience.'
When you hunt, you want to kill that animal. Just driving down the road, you didn't sign up, so to speak, to kill something.

I laugh partly because I am sick, but more so because I have been in very similar situation without firearms or correct methods. Had to go caveman style and use a large rock overhead with both hands coming down hard.
Absolutley a nightmare situation to be in. All I kept thinking about was who in the heck might drive up at that very moment. Or what the heck might be running through the minds of the rest of the little woodland critters undoubtably watching from the bushes.
You did the right thing. Seeing suffering and doing nothing about it is definatley not cool.

HAHAHAH that would trump my image.
Me- crouching over a wounded animal with a large rock over my head about to finish it off.
Someone that drives up at that moment would just think I am a lunatic.
You-crouching over a wounded animal with jumper cables in hand...
Somone just driving up...."hey stranger, can I help? You trying to start your car?"
You response- "no Trying to start a raccoon"

Wow, that is a tricky one. I have, and would do it again, swerved off the road to avoid a squirrel. My eyes dart everywhere for wild life. Not to make you feel bad, but raccoons don't just dart. They are quick, but not that quick. I won't reply to what you did after that, nor to RFB's solution. The only thing that I have ever hit was a chipmunk and he was dead upon impact. I tried to miss him but he ran under the tire.
