What would you do?

What stores are you shopping in? Lol
It's not a terrible price, but I wouldn't offer the full asking amount. Here's the thing: As large as this hobby has become, it's still small in the big picture. He's not selling that tank easily. Large systems are tough to sell and people need to realize that they're not even going to come close to making back half their invested money. With this economy, he's lucky to get $400. If you feel like you really want this tank, offer $400, he might come back with $500, and then maybe I'd bite.

Where I live, we have been relatively untouched by the recession and our economy is one of the best in the country. We did not see the effects that many in the US felt, even other provinces here felt and I know how fortunate I am to live in such a place. I understand what you are saying about the value of a used system, I've seen posts saying at least half of retail for reselling. We also pay alot more than what I've seen my US neighbours paying for the same thing. I am not one for trying to rip anyone off either, I know what I've paid for my set up and know that to part out, I'd lose a ton for what I put in. Alot of local reefers will trade, offer help or throw in extras, the people I've met here are fantastic, so you never know when you will cross paths again.
As far as where I'm shopping - most large chain pet stores carry aquarium stuff, I look everytime I go in, pricing on tanks is very competitive throughout. There is a company here that builds custom tanks, I have not talked to them but I think this would be even more expensive.
I will ask more detailed questions on the set up and equipment. I'll also price out the equipment new.
Thanks for the input everyone. Does anyone have any advice on going to a larger system- pros/cons? There are obvious ones, more forgiving if something happens in the tank, can house larger fish. Any other thoughts that should be considered?

Yes I have a pro... A large tank looks BA!!!! Come on you know you want to buy it. You know how good it will look. Just get the price down a bit and pull the trigger (pun completely intended!!).
