What would you have done?

So I was at my LFS today looking at their stock. Three guys were there buying a crocea clam and some other stuff. It seemed like the tank was relatively new. Anyway one of the guys says "Hey, do you have any of those cool orange starfish"? The LFS guy says "You mean Linkia? I have a blue one and a orange one." The next question the guy asked was about a clean up crew for a 12 gallon tank!
I wanted to tell the guy that there is no way a Linkia can survive in a 12g tank! But I kept my mouth shut.
So what would you have done?

I would have asked him if he had the metal halide lighting for the clam....and if he said what is metal halide lighting? I would talk to this person and tell him the clam would die without it. I will not stand by and let things die, and if the person did not care after telling them that is their problem. I feel bad for the creatures. Lesley

I usually don't get involved much, but generally try. Everyone likes to think their tank is "different" from the rules, what affects/applies to you, doesn't effect me. And as long as they get to hear what they want from someone, you, the LFS employee or one of their friends, they'll follow through with it.

I would encourage the consumer to become an educated consumer. Can't blame the LFS IMO. Bills need paid and it's unfair that it's so easy to capitalize on ignorance. Lots of dumb people out there. Sounds harsh but I believe it's true.

So my feeling is that I am a customer just like the 3 guys. I am not an expert, but I believe that I am a little more informed then they seem to have been.
As this is one of two LFS in my area, I have made purchases there and will in the future. I felt that it would have been out of place for me to disagree with the sales person to their face.
That being said, a lady who clearly was just starting out was telling her daugther that they should get one of the "pretty blue fishes" for their tank. Since nobody was helping them, I recommended against getting that pretty damsel unless they wanted a damsel only tank.

Wish someone would have warned me in the beginning...my LFS gives horrible advice...anything to sell...I ended up with a 3 stripe damsel that was so mean I had to put up a 10gal aquarium JUST for him...and "a few" other bad buys through the years...I learned numerous times it is better to check things out before buying. ..imagine that.
It is unfortunate but it isn't all the LFS fault either. they have alot of people who are there for the job and not because they love the hobby. We must be held responsible for our own selection and that is why we need to just do a little research BEFORE we make that purchase...can save a big headache and alot of stress to the others in your tank.

I will say something when the advice being given is horribly incorrect, the customer is about to waste alot of money, and when i know the fish will die.
